With Vancouver being the epicenter for the 2010 winter games we wanted a mental health perspective. On this episode of ‘Art of the Mind’ we explore the psychology of sport and what tools are the elite athletes using to maximize their performance?
We speak with Ross Flowers a Psychologist with the United States Olympic Team to find out what mental preparation and techniques are being employed by today’s top athletes.
In addition, we talk with US Speedskating Executive Director, Bob Crowley on how Stephen Colbert, host of the Colbert Report and leader of Colbert Nation was named as the Assistant Sport Psychologist for the team.
Later in the show we will have Nicole Detling Miller, who was a guest on the Colbert Report and is Stephen’s Boss on the team.
We attempt to get some insight into Colbert’s recent fascination with Canadian Culture and what his plans are for the Olympics in Vancouver. Original broadcast date is Monday February 15th @ 7pm PST, online @ cjsf.ca.
Live in studio we have Karen Larson a local musician whose soulful tunes will keep our minds at ease.

I am happy to be participating in the Connect show sponsored by the City of Vancouver, the Gathering Place and Coast Mental Health. I consider downtown Vancouver a part of my community as well as inspiration for my personal social advocacy. There is amazing physical beauty in the city, however amongst the sea, mountain and skyskrapers are personal stories of survival that are truly inspiring. These stories aren’t likely to make the front page of mass media, or have the provocative nature for a viral exposure.
Astonishingly, many of the artists in this show are either still homeless, or have been at one point, accounting for almost half the artists in the exhibition. The expression of individual struggles requires courage but the opportunity for the public to see it takes a community to make it happen.
Jeanne Krabbendam, artist and one of the organizers of the show states, “I am excited about combining artists and art from people who use social services in the Downtown South with residents, small business employees and others connected to the Downtown South of Vancouver,” If you are in town for the Winter games in Vancouver, the exhibit is open February 6th to 28th, daily 1pm-8pm and March 1st to 20th, Wednesday to Saturday 1pm-6pm.

Senator Michael Kirby has been a lightening rod for Mental Health change within the political system in Canada. As someone who has experienced first hand the impact of mental illness in the family, Senator Kirby speaks passionately on the issue. Senator Kirby authored the Senate report ‘Out of the Shadows at Last‘ which led to the creation of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. In honour of his contribution Michael Kirby was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. We spoke with the Senator at the Into the Light Conference, held recently in Vancouver. (5 mins)

Gillian, a mental health survivor herself is one of the first two members of the strategy team. She speaks about the mandate of the Commission and the initiatives that are being rolled out over the next few years.

In this episode we ask why mental health should matter to Canadians? For most Canadians mental health is a loaded word perpetuated by the entertainment, television and mainstream media. Mental Health is demonized in this country, so much so that most people can’t have a mature conversation on the topic. It’s taboo, it’s uncomfortable and dangerously misunderstood. We are now in the information age, an economy driven by creativity and production of intellectual capital; these are outputs of the mind! So what are we doing in this country to ensure and maintain a sound mind?
This broadcast will look specifically at the Mental Health Commission of Canada and its role in re-shaping the way Mental Health and Wellness is viewed in this country. In comparison to the rest of the industrialized world, Canada falls behind in relative terms with respect to its investment in mental health programs. So as a taxpayer, why should I care?
In this broadcast we will be having an open discussion about mental health and in specific, how individuals and society should we be participating in this social issue. We will also have interviews with Senator Michael Kirby, chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada and Gillian Mulvale, a strategist also from the Commission.

In this episode, Sound Therapy explores issues on Spirituality. As we are exposed to different methods of aligning our chakras, chi, spirit and mojo, the information on these practices can get terribly overwhelming. In the first part of the episode we will be speaking with Alexandra Amor, a woman whose spiritual longings led her into the oppressive world of a BC cult. Part 2 we speak with Marja Bergen, founder of the Christian based mental/spiritual health group Living Room Support.
In studio playing live is singer/songwriter John Pippus. John is based in Vancouver and creator of the critically acclaimed play Oh Winnipeg. The production was a pick of the Fringe at the 2009 Vancouver Fringe Festival.
In case you missed the live broadcast have a listen to our archive below.
Part 1: Alexandra Amor. Cult, A Love Story
Alexandra Amor is the author and subject of Cult, A Love Story, a powerful and intimate memoir chronicling one woman’s experience under the spell of a manipulative leader in a BC cult and the hard-won break and triumphant recovery from thought reform.
Part 2: Marja Bergen, Living Room Support
Often times mental health issues are dangerously mistaken as a spiritual crisis. Many spiritual leaders are misinformed about the biological and social issues around mental health and this ignorance prevents individuals suffering certain conditions from getting the vital help they need. We speak with Marja Bergen, founder and facilitator of Living Room Support whose faith based support group gives Christians dealing with mental health issues a safe environment to self-manage their condition in balance with their faith.
Also performing Live is Musical guest John Pippus

HOMELESSNESS MATTERS
CJSF 90.1FM issues a call-out for Vancouver’s Homeless Musicians to perform in a Live Radio Event.
CJSF Campus/Community radio is calling for homeless musicians in the lower mainland to contact the radio in order to take part in this year’s Vancouver segment of the Homelessness Marathon broadcast.
On Tuesday, February 23 from 8-10 pm, the W2 Culture + Media House at 112 West Hastings will be the location for the Vancouver segment of the national Homelessness Marathon. The event will be hosted by Ryan Fletcher of CJSF’s Melodies in Mind and Jay Peachy, local artist with DTES Gallery Gachet and producer of Sound Therapy Radio, an arts and mental health program also on CJSF.
As an artist and mental health advocate, Peachy sees hosting homeless musicians on the program as a personal mission:
“They relate to me personally as an artist and a mental health advocate, and they are also my friends,” said Peachy adding that this year’s show has even more importance because of the homelessness issues surrounding the Olympics.
The Homelessness Marathon is a 14 hour national community/campus radio program featuring the voices and stories of homeless people in the United States and Canada. In Canada, the program is carried out by over 40 different community radio stations and is available for free to all non-commercial broadcasters online.
Alongside CJSF, CITR and Co-Op Radio will also be taking part in this year’s Marathon.
The deadline for musicians to contact the station is Sunday, Feb 21. The artists can reach the station by phone at 778-782-4423; by email at [email protected]; or by leaving a message for CJSF at 112 W. Hastings.
